Unit of Measure Overview
Understanding and correctly using Units of Measure (UOMs) is essential for maintaining accurate inventory, streamlining operations, and ensuring seamless order fulfillment. This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) outlines how to effectively set up and manage UOMs, helping you reduce manual errors, automate product quantity calculations, and optimize warehouse workflows. Whether you’re dealing with bulk items, individual units, or custom packaging, this guide will walk you through the key steps and best practices to implement UOMs with confidence.
A Unit of Measure (UOM) can have up to 4 levels of nesting, each with different possible configurations:
- Pallet → Master Case → Inner Pack → Each

IMPORTANT CALL OUTS
Naming of UOM SKUs
You can use whatever naming convention you would like, but we typically recommend the following structure so it is also human legible:
Example Eaches (aka individual) SKU: ABC
Case of 50 Unit of Measure SKU: ABC-50
Pallet of 150 Unit of Measure SKU: ABC-150
Note: WIthin ShipHero you will see these as their own SKUs in the Product table. You can use the filters on the left side of the table to toggle UOM "Is UOM" on/off to hide/show those skus.
Accessing / Labeling Setup
You can access your UOM barcodes and apply them to the outside of the master cases, inner cases, or pallets, just like you would any other barcode. Instructions for that can be found here: https://shiplab.helpscoutdocs.com/article/53-accessing-your-barcodes
